Taekwon-Do in Sri Lanka

What is Taekwon-Do ?

Modern TAEKWON-DO is the result of the combination of hand techniques to the 1300 year old traditional Korean martial art TAE KYON.

1. TAE means to kick, jumping kick or foot

2. KWON means fist or destroy with hand or fist

3. DO means the art or way or method.
Therefore TAEKWON-DO gives the meaning Foot and Hand Art.

General Choi Hong Hi mastered TAE KYON and introduced a new martial art to the world in 1955 and it was named TAEKWON-DO.

TAEKWON-DO which is approved as an Olympic sport and in other main sports games was introduced to Sri Lanka by                       Dr. Cyril Antony.

Until 1972 there was no word in Sinhala for TAEKWON-DO. In Korean Language TAEKWON-DO is               it is pronounced  tekkwon-daw (fglalafjdkafvdõ). But to suit the Sinhala accent Dr. Cyril Antony who introduced TAEKWON-DO to Sri Lanka named TAEKWON-DO in Sinhalese as ghsfldkafvda (pronounced TAIKONDO) in 1972.
